Introduction

The sequel to Chart-Topping Drum Beats 1, this book picks up where the first book left off. A similar process for skill development is used but more advanced drumming techniques are explored. Upon completion of this book, you will have mastered the most-important, advanced drumming techniques used in chart-topping songs from the ’60s through today.

Below is the notation guide that is used throughout this book.

Drum Notation Guide

Notation Explanations

If you’ve worked through Chart-Topping Drum Beats 1, you’re already familiar with most of the stroke types used in book 2. There are a few new stroke types that you’ll be learning. The following is a brief explanation of the new stroke types and a review of the stroke types from book 1.

Hi-Hat w/ Foot:

Press the hi-hat pedal so that the hi-hat cymbals hit together, making a sound.

Ghosted Snare:

Lightly tap the snare drum.

Diddle:

Sometimes referred to as a double-bounce – Instead of playing one stroke, play two. You can achieve this by bouncing the stick and catching it after it hits twice.

Loose Hi-Hats:

This is similar to an open hi-hat stroke, but the hi-hat is only partially opened, making a loose hi-hat sound.

Open Hi-Hats:

Strike the hi-hat cymbal in the open position. The two hi-hat cymbals should not be touching when you strike them, but they can touch after the stroke as they respond to your hit.
