Intermediate Snare Drum (Mini Book)

Learn to read and play more complex rhythms with sixteenth rests, dotted eighth notes, syncopation and multiple time signatures.

Book Pages

  • Learn to read and play rhythms with sixteenth rests. Sixteenth rests are counted like sixteenth notes but you “rest” on the count instead of play.

  • Continue learning to play rhythms with sixteenth rests with these more complex and syncopated patterns.

  • A dot after a note adds half the note’s duration. When placed after an eighth note, the dot is worth a sixteenth, creating some interesting rhythms.

  • Put it all together with these three snare drum etudes.

  • Just like a dot placed after an eighth note, a dot placed after an eighth rest adds a sixteenth, creating a longer more syncopated pause.

  • So far, you’ve learned to read and play eighth notes that begin on either a number or an “&”. Eighth notes can also begin on an “e” or “ah” offering a way to write the music notation without the need for a sixteenth rest.

  • The two-four time signature is very similar to the four-four time signature you’ve played so far. The difference is that in two-four, each bar has only two beats (instead of four).

  • The three-four time signature has 3 beats per bar. Playing music with three beats per bar creates a unique feel that’s distinct from the four-four or two-four time signatures.

  • Test your reading and playing skills with this snare drum solo that ties in all of the things you’ve learned throughout this lesson.

“Each beat I play is like a sentence, and together they form the story of the song.”
