Beginner Snare Drum (Mini Book)

Learn to read and play the foundational notes, rests and rhythms on the snare drum.

Book Pages

  • Practice your playing and reading skills on the snare drum with whole notes, half notes, and quarter notes.

  • Make your drumming more interesting by adding quarter rests.

  • Put it all together with these three short snare drum etudes that will challenge your reading and playing skills while also sounding great.

  • Whole rests and half rests look similar to each other, but the main difference is that a whole rest attaches underneath the bar line. A half rest is above the bar line. While not used quite as often in snare drumming, whole and half rests are important to recognize for when they do make an appearance.

  • Learn to read and play eighth notes on the snare drum. By far the most-used note value in drumming, eighth notes are played at twice the “speed” of quarter notes.

  • Learn to read and play more challenging sets of eighth note patterns on the snare drum.

  • Learn to read and play rhythms with eighth rests.

  • Learn to read and play more challenging rhythms with eighth rests.

  • Test yourself with the skills learned throughout this mini course. Suggested sticking is included, but no “counts” are provided. Counting along on your own as you play can be very helpful.

“Drummers are like referees: no one notices us unless we mess up.”
